چکیده

This study explores whether there is an asymmetry with respect to the perceptual salience of an increase vs. a decrease of phonologically relevant features. A forced-choice discrimination experiment was conducted on stimulus pairs that included one member with unchanged phonetic features and the other with either increased or decreased degree of features (i.e., vowel nasality or VOT). The results revealed a perceptual asymmetry: participants were more accurate and in some cases faster in their responses to stimulus-pairs containing increasedfeature stimuli, suggesting that greater presence of these phonetic features is perceptually more salient than decreased presence. These findings demonstrate sub-categorical sensitivity for features known to be perceived categorically (VOT), as well as for features not primary to phonological contrast (vowel nasality). They also support a possible salience explanation for previously observed asymmetries in phonetic imitation.

Vowel Duration as a Perceptual Cue for Preceding Stop Laryngeal Contrast in Korean

This study explores the effects of vowel duration in identifying the previous stop laryngeal contrast in Korean. The durational resolution in Korean shows a limited variation of syllable duration and a strong correlation between VOT and vowel duration [1]. The systematic variation of vowel duration due to different VOTs of prevocalic stops suggests vowel duration as a plausible perceptual cue i...

Effects of nasal port area on perception of nasality and measures of nasalance based on computational modeling.

OBJECTIVE This study examined the relation between nasal port area, nasalance, and perceptual ratings of nasality for three English corner vowels, /i/, /u/, and /a/. DESIGN Samples were simulated using a computational model that allowed for exact control of nasal port size and direct measures of nasalance. Perceptual ratings were obtained using a paired stimulus presentation. PARTICIPANTS F...

Perception and Acoustics of Vowel Nasality in Brazilian Portuguese

This study explores the relationship between identification, degree of nasality and vowel quality in oral, nasal and nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese. Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued th...

Acoustic cues for the perception of aspiration in Cantonese initial stops Poon Man Wai, May A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Science

This study investigated the significant acoustic cues used in the perception of aspiration contrast in Cantonese initial stops by normal hearing adults. The effects of vowel characteristics, aspiration noise level and voice-onset time (VOT) duration on aspiration perception in Cantonese initial stops were studied. The stimuli were consonant-vowel (CV) real words recorded by a male Cantonese nat...

Individual differences in phonetic cue use in production and perception of a non-native sound contrast

The current work examines native Korean speakers' perception and production of stop contrasts in their native language (L1, Korean) and second language (L2, English), focusing on three acoustic dimensions that are all used, albeit to different extents, in both languages: voice onset time (VOT), f0 at vowel onset, and closure duration. Participants used all three cues to distinguish the L1 Korea...
